Cornfields to Codfish

Musings by Linda Malcolm

Linda Malcolm’s debut collection of short essays, Cornfields to Codfish, is an American look at what makes life delicious. Told in bite-sized vignettes about her life on an Iowa farm and new life with her family in New England, Malcolm’s work explores the potent links between memory, food, and place.

One of just sixteen non-fiction writers invited to the 2018 New York State Summer Writers Institute, Malcolm has compiled a delicious collection of writings that mark out place and food as archives of memories, sensations, and histories. Written in three sections, Cornfields to Codfish charts Malcolm’s travels over time, across the US, and abroad.

In "Cornfields" Malcolm treats our senses to a kaleidoscopic look at life on a Midwest farm as a child and covers a rural array of topics like milking cows in a warm winter barn, hunting for morel mushrooms, and “doing corn” picked fresh from the field.

For “Codfish” Malcolm turns her insightful eye on her present life as a transplant in New England. She describes the geography and cuisine with an infectious passion that carries over from the first part of her collection.

Finally, Malcolm entices us with “A Menagerie of Recipes.” From lefse and devil’s food cake to swordfish and scones, recipes come together in aromatic layers of sweet time and patience, much like the memories Malcolm writes about in her collection.
